Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Office of Information and Communications Technology internship is for six months.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Works as part of a team in the planning and support of computer application systems and programs using UN established standards.
  • Provides technical assistance and support for incoming queries and issues related to computer systems and software via different channels such as phone calls, e-mails, instant messages etc.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and provides continuing user support, to include resolving difficult problems, advising on the use of new techniques, monitoring transactions to measure performance and continued effectiveness of assigned systems, etc.
  • Follows up with customers to ensure issue has been resolved, gain feedback from customers about computer usage, and run reports to determine malfunctions and defects that continue to occur.
  • Participates in writing reports and papers on systems-related topics, system requirements, information strategy, etc.
  • Prepares user documentation for deployed computer application systems, training materials and conducts technical presentations; drafts correspondence and communications.
  • Additional activities that may be required to ensure the success of the work team.
The intern will have an opportunity to gain practical knowledge and understanding in the project and resources planning, implementation, and operation of United Nations global support centre, and the application of the new United Nations Talent Management System built on a modern ERP platform (SAP).

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
Work Experience
Applicants
  • are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme;
  • shall be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
  • be familiar with cutting-edge technology and tools and/or have exposure with Six Sigma, ITIL, CRM.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
