Position description
You
An awesome communicator and passionate progressive. You're a news junkie and a natural at all things digital, from updating websites to sparking conversation on Twitter and Facebook. You're great at coming up with snappy lines to change your friend's minds on everything from income inequality, to foreign policy and pop culture. You're a people-person, who's well organized and always gets the job done.
Us
We focus on issues of equity and opportunity in the United States, and how American values can best be sustained and advanced in a world of more diffuse power. Century's domestic work concentrates mainly on economic policy, education, labor, social insurance and national security, while the foundation's current international activities primarily address challenges for the United States and international institutions in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
We were founded in 1919 and initially funded by Edward Filene, who is best known for his store's Basement which was established to make goods affordable to working people. He was a close associate of President Franklin Roosevelt and one of the leading liberal businessmen in the country. Along the way he was a champion of fair workplaces and employee ownership strategies, with an eye to ensuring that economic opportunity was available to all. Our work today continues to be inspired and infused with those values.
The Gig
We're searching for a communications associate to join our small communications team. You'll be doing a bit of everything, from posting to TCF's Twitter and Facebook accounts, to monitoring media mentions, updating our website, drafting subscriber emails and helping to run our events.
Qualifications
- Some practical experience working in or around strategic communications. This could include volunteer work, internships or campaigning experience.
- Working knowledge of social media platforms. Professional experience using/maintaining social media accounts is a plus.
- Experience using a content management system. (TCF uses ExpressionEngine, but as long as you have experience with something like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc., you'll be fine.)
- Some experience managing events, big or small, is desirable.
- Experience or skills in graphic design, video production, media database management or web development will get you serious bonus points.
Qualifications
- College. You should be a graduate with a major in communications, PR, advertising, marketing, journalism, or something closely related.
- A self-starter. You're looking for the opportunity to own a project and work independently.
- A team player. TCF's comms team is highly collaborative. We want you to own your project, but we also want you to remember that your teammates have some skills that you probably don't.
- Organized. You'll be working on a lot of different things on any given day. You'll have to be good with details, organized, and an efficient multi-tasker to succeed here.
- A good writer. Everyone thinks they write well. You actually do.
- A progressive. TCF is a progressive public policy think tank. If you spend your evenings with Hannity and Beck, you'll probably be pretty unhappy here.
