SCOPE
AmeriCorps VISTA is a national program where community members have the opportunity to serve in local nonprofits for one year helping eliminate poverty. In return for service, members receive a living allowance, health insurance and other benefits.
The VISTA position will focus efforts on the Economic Opportunity for New Americans initiative and in career development for refugees who already have their first jobs in the U.S. The Economic Opportunity for New Americans is a new project at IRC ensuring that new refugee arrivals and others have the basic tools they need to responsibly manage their financial affairs and provide connections to resources offered at IRC and elsewhere to further their long-term economic welfare (like building credit and engaging in microbusiness activities). The position will increase the capacity of the program by systematizing a referral system for internal IRC and external participants, tracking program outcomes and creating an assessment system to track the progress of participants. The position will also work to generate a network of employers and positions as career development options for refugees already in entry-level jobs and create a system to track employers. The VISTA reports directly to the Economic Empowerment Program Manager and work closely with program staff in financial literacy, microenterprise and employment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
  • Participate in assessment design
  • Conduct market research
  • Develop an appropriate customer relationship management system
  • Create clear referral systems for career development services and enrollment in financial literacy
  • Identify and outreach to employers and other community actors
  • Work to create awareness in the community of these services and resources
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
  • Full-time service for one year without school or other work commitments
  • Background in areas of finance, business development, social services, microenterprise desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of different linguistic backgrounds.
  • Highly organized with excellent time and space management skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and Word
  • Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to speak passionately and articulately about our mission
  • Professional, friendly, and courteous attitude a must
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle and must have proof of insurance and good driving record
AmeriCorps VISTA BENEFITS
  • Living Allowance ($973 a month pre-taxes),
  • At the end of year of service, the VISTA can choose an Education Award ($5,550) or End of Service Cash Stipend ($1,500)
