Background / General description
IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is the largest multilateral provider of financing for private enterprise in emerging markets. IFC provides loans, equity, structured finance and risk management tools as well as advisory services to build the private sector in developing countries. IFC invests in private sector projects that are financially and economically viable and have a substantial development impact. The Corporation is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Financial Institutions Group (FIG), one of IFC's largest industry department, supports projects in numerous financial subsectors, builds local financial institutions, develops local equity and debt markets and introduces new financing instruments. The goal is to develop efficient financial systems that will fuel economic growth in client countries and enhance IFC's developmental impact. FIG's Global Portfolio Unit in Washington DC is recruiting an investment analyst to join the research and portfolio team, which supports the department (a) in providing research and analytical support for the product/sector specialists in Equity, SME banking, Microfinance, Housing and Insurance, and (b) in client and portfolio management, including regular analysis of financial and compliance reporting, and general supervision of IFC's financial sector investments in the World region. The Analyst will report to the Manager, Global Portfolio Unit.
Note: If the selected candidate is a current Bank Group staff member with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, s/he will retain his/her Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a 2 year term appointment.
Duties and Accountabilities
Work closely with IFC's product and investment officers, who are responsible for identification, negotiation, structuring and subsequent supervision of the Corporation's investment projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Analyzing historical and projected financial statements of prospective clients.
  • Assist in portfolio analyses and initiatives, strategy, pitch books and presentations, support FIG reporting through database management and data analysis.
  • Monitoring existing investments in portfolio companies, including various types of financial entities.
  • Conducting industry and market research, for the individual FIG global product and sector specialists
  • Reviewing company information and preparing internal reports based on periodic financial statements, project progress reports, and other information submitted by clients.
Conduct market research and analysis for the Global Portfolio Unit and Product/Sector Specialists.
Selection Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree with specialization in finance, economics or business. Minimum one years of relevant work experience in an investment related function.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; exposure to Excel based financial models.
  • Good understanding of the financial and operational characteristics of financial institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in multicultural teams and across boundaries.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; understanding of French or Spanish a plus.
