Purpose of the Position
Under the supervision of the Chief of Communications, the Communication Specialist will perform the following duties: Key Expected Results


  • Support the implementation of a communication strategy and work plan to raise the profile of children and children's issues in the Syria crisis in the International and Arab media.
  • Write and edit human interest stories and produce/or coordinate the production of materials (text stories, photo essays, video stories, social media inputs) on the situation of Syrian children and UNICEF programmes.
  • Coordinate with UNICEF programme colleagues and field partners for the collection of visibility/communication materials from the field.
  • Ensure maximum UNICEF visibility in the various media outlets and undertake media outreach/pitching of child/UNICEF-related stories.
  • Support the visibility of UNICEF's role in the crisis in Syria through contributions to UNICEF Syria social media channels.
  • Support interaction with UNICEF Natcoms and provision of communication materials.
  • Produce briefing materials as necessary for official visits, senior management, media, donors, etc.
  • Support efforts for timely Syria Country Office (SCO) reporting on mandatory region-wide and corporate reporting tools such as Syria crisis SitReps, monthly S-G reporting to the UN SC on Syrian Crisis
  • Support CO fundraising efforts by ensuring field visibility of UNICEF, and making communication materials available.
  • Contribute regular updates to UNICEF Icon and other internal communication platforms.
Qualifications of Successful Candidate
EDUCATION
  • Advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations; or equivalent professional work experience in the communication area, combined with a university degree in a related field.
  • A first university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Five years progressively responsible professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media or interactive digital media..
  • Specific Technical Knowledge Required (for the job): demonstrated ability to draft media releases, human interest stories and other communication materials. Video production skills an asset.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Language Proficiency
  • Very good command of English, Knowledge of Arabic, desirable.
  • Knowledge of another UN language an asset.
